The travels, meetings and speeches of a J.M. Coetzee character

Krzysztof Warlikowski, the Polish director and founder of the Nowy Teatr in Warsaw, brings to the stage a novel by the South African writer John Maxwell Coetzee (Nobel Prize in Literature).

The show, comprising several tales and an epilogue, sets out a theatrical debate on increasingly more uncomfortable issues, such as the fate of animals, social injustice, and the exclusion of the elderly and the sick.

A contemporary production led by the writer Elizabeth Costello, a fictional character featured in several of the writer’s novels and, curiously, also in other productions by Warlikowski.

Costello, who might be a kind of alter ego of Coetzee, is an Australian woman of a certain age who is travelling to deliver lectures in several countries of the world, in which she speaks about philosophy, the environment, and social and existential issues.
