A classic by Simone de Beauvoir on the structural violence of gender roles


After discovering that her husband is having an affair with a younger woman, Monique tries to set down the evolution of her thoughts and perceptions in a diary. She had always seen herself as a model in the female condition and its assumed gender roles, but in the new situation she will begin to reassess most of the values on which she had built her personal and social life.


Through this story written in the first person published in 1967, Simone de Beauvoir stressed the many types of structural violence concealed under the mirages of the ideal of “femininity”. Over 50 years later, the text still challenges many of the dynamics of our society.
