The freethinker Rossend Arús was a key figure in the social and cultural activism of the second half of the 19th century in Catalonia. With his legacy, managed by his friend Valentí Almirall, the Biblioteca Pública Arús located in passeig de Sant Joan in Barcelona was founded, which this season is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its creation.

The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya joins in this celebration by promoting Rossend Arús’ impressive facet as a playwright. It will publish a volume of his plays with Arola Editors, and there will be a dramatised reading of the play 1869 at the Casal Transformadors.

The sharp comedy 1869 is a “magic lantern” that Arús wrote to commemorate the end of the year 1869 and the arrival of the new decade. This kind of profane morality play with a clear political tone reflects the great turmoil experienced by Catalan society in a decisive year of multiple crossroads beginning to appear on the horizon of a new society, a few months after the Glorious Revolution and a few years before the establishment of the First Spanish Republic.
