Anatomia d’un suïcidi

Past, present and future resonate at the same time.

Anatomy of a Suicide is a triptych of three stories unfolding simultaneously on stage. Three generations of women—Carol, Anna, and Bonnie—are bound together by the same traumatic event: suicide.

Glòria Balañà directs one of the most powerful works by Alice Birch, one of the most compelling contemporary voices in European playwriting. With poetic and striking writing, the author explores the persistence of a painful legacy passed down through the maternal line. To what extent are we shaped by inheritance, or are we terrifyingly free when facing our own fate?

Alice Birch (Malvern, 1986) is a British playwright and screenwriter. Her recent works include the adaptation of The House of Bernarda Alba (National Theatre), [BLANK] (Donmar Warehouse / Clean Break), Orlando (Schaubühne, Berlin), and Anatomy of a Suicide (Royal Court Theatre). In 2023, she created and produced the original series Dead Ringers for Amazon, starring Rachel Weisz and inspired by Cronenberg’s 1988 film. She also wrote the screenplays for the adaptations of Normal People (Emmy-nominated) and Conversations with Friends, and served as story editor for the second season of Succession (HBO). Her first feature film, Lady Macbeth, won five BIFA Awards in 2017, including Best Screenplay. She has also worked on Mothering Sunday, The Wonder, and The End We Start From. She has received prestigious awards such as the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (2018), the George Devine Award (for Revolt. She said. Revolt again), and the Arts Foundation Award for Playwriting.

When I first read Anatomy of a Suicide by British playwright Alice Birch a few years ago, I was fascinated. The sensitivity and intelligence with which she explores themes such as depression and suicide—through the portrait of three generations of women—struck me as brilliant. The formal structure of the play—three stories unfolding simultaneously—is deeply connected to the attempt to dissect the painful legacy weighing on these women and those around them. Past, present, and future resonate at the same time.

Without losing her sense of humor and with her exquisite poetic touch, Alice Birch presents a courageous and deeply human study of despair and love. With motherhood as the thread running through all three stories, she raises questions about the legacies we inherit. Carol, Anna, and Bonnie face the chaos of unstable lives and struggle to swim toward the surface.
