Breve historia del ferrocarril español

A scandal of dirty tricks, corruption and endless disputes

Focusing on the origins of capitalism in Spain and its close relationship with the royal family, the playwright Joan Yago returns to the TNC to present Breve historia del ferrocarril español, a documentary theatre show that takes a mocking and evidently political stance.

Almost two centuries separate the first journey of the Madrid-Aranjuez railway and the opening of the AVE high speed train to Mecca; almost two hundred years in which everything has changed and everything remains as it was. An exercise in memory that can also become an exercise in justice.

On stage, two women embark on a bold and irreverent journey into the 19th century to jointly reconstruct the story of the first major ‘get-rich-quick scheme’ of capitalism in Spain: the development of “our” railway network. A full-blown scandal of shady deals, corruption, and endless revelry — whose staging will allow us to meet those who enriched themselves at our expense.

The philosopher Anne Dufourmantelle says that scandal strikes by tearing us apart completely and toppling every point of reference or support. I like that idea, because it’s in that very mess it creates where the possibility of something new emerging arises. Hopefully, the staging of this play will be, in that sense, a tribute to scandal — one capable of jolting from their seats all those who dare to board this train.
