Chekhov's classical play by the National Drama Center starring the great Carmen Machi
Drowning under the burden of debt, the owners of an old country estate find themselves forced to auction their property, where there is an emblematic cherry orchard. The new buyer will be the son of the old serfs, who want to convert the property into a holiday complex. To fully exploit the land, they will have to cut down the cherry orchard.
Chekov wrote this “comedy” just before the 1905 Russian revolution, which would be a prelude to the profound transformations of the country with the end of tsarism. The play portrays the decline of the aristocracy and the loss of old privileges faced with the emergence of new social forces that have little to do with traditional values that are clearly disappearing.
