L'aranya

The portrait of an era when the most hidden desires constantly fight against social pressure

A romantic tragedy that portrays the hopes and disappointments, loves and heartbreaks, loyalties and betrayals of a couple that cannot have a child. An uncomfortable piece full of tensions in which a grocery store is the setting where the most hidden desires and the social pressures of a closed society coexist.

L’aranya, one of the last plays from Guimerà’s theatre to be discovered, comes for the first time to the TNC with dramaturgy and direction by Jordi Prat i Coll, who approaches this classic from a very personal perspective.

With the desire to perform TNC productions throughout the Catalan-speaking world, L'aranya will go on tour after the performances in the Sala Gran.

The TNC goes on tour is a joint initiative of the TNC and the Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya to bring theatre to new audiences and contribute to cultural decentralisation.

Àngel Guimerà was homosexual. I don’t know why it’s still so difficult for us to admit it publicly today. And it is also under this circumstance that he writes The Spiders, a play that speaks of infertility. Not by chance, another homosexual man—who also took quite some time to come out of the closet—would write Yerma years later. It is under social pressure and the obsession of those who cannot have children that Guimerà structures The Spiders, allowing his realist drama to unfold under a suffocating weight of desire and the need for offspring.

The original is set in Barcelona in 1908, but for personal reasons, I’ve rewritten it to take place in Girona in 1968, to give visibility to ordinary people like my parents who, from their shop and far from the Gauche Divine, shared the suffocation of a Francoist regime that made it difficult for them to carry out acts of freedom.
