Hannibal

A metaphor for all the wars waged today in an ever changing and frightening world

Hannibal, by Michael De Cock and Junior Mthombeni, is a contemporary opera that reinterprets Dido and Aeneas by composer Henry Purcell.

In this piece about war, Michael De Cock and Junior Mthombeni capture the metropolitan setting in a form of musical theatre that mixes urban arts and musical traditions from all continents. A production that examines the importance of being inspired by people, movements and events from the recent past.

Hannibal is a coproduction of KVS and the TNC that comes to Barcelona after its premiere in Brussels.

With Hannibal, we promise a fascinating blend of opera, slam, house... All brought to life by a stellar cast brimming with talent and contemporary music producers who reinterpret Dido and Aeneas by baroque composer Henry Purcell. Together, we bring you the story of Hannibal, the Punic Wars, and the birth of Europe. In the 3rd century BC, the Carthaginian general Hannibal began his dizzying journey: he led his troops through Spain, France, and Italy in an expedition that shook the foundations of the Roman Empire. Hannibal ad portas! The Punic Wars, a metaphor for all the wars fought today in a world that is ever-changing and unsettling. Hannibal gives us a lens through which to examine the clash between old and new, using a unique synergy of opera and slam, contemporary dance and performance. Grand, splendid, transcendent.
