A dangerous game of power and domination


Martin Crimp’s play, inspired by Samuel Richardson novel Pamela, sets out the relationship between six characters of various social status and ages who perform a dangerous game of power and domination. It bursts into the contemporary debate in order to explore the messy, and often violent, nature of desire, the performative nature of male and female roles, the fluidity of gender, the contradictions between feminist ideology and sexual attraction or the mediatisation of desire through economic power.

Martin Crimp is an exceptional playwright, with a very personal vision of the world and highly sensitive towards contemporary issues of debate. He carries out an ongoing revision of dramatic forms and aims to challenge satisfied consciences and break taboos. His dramatic work is concise, blunt, ironic and uninhibited.


Many of the questions explored in the play have long occupied our minds: the boundaries of gender roles, the mediatisation of desire through economic power, sexual desire in contradiction with the feminist ideology itself, the limits of language and the power of those who dominate the narrative by keeping us within established paradigms, the impossibility of overcoming the determinism of social class itself.


In short, exhausting patriarchal-colonial capitalism and, therefore, the possibility of creating new narratives for the future of humanity.


This is an engrossing play that can irritate, move, entertain or, simply, leave the audience bewildered. But there is no doubt that people will need to talk about it when it ends, and I have always thought that this is one of the most important things that theatre can encourage
