Blanca Portillo stars a powerfull monolegue about the power of silence


Wearing a suit that he doesn't quite feel comfortable in, the playwright is about to enter the Academy to deliver a speech entitled Silence.


He has chosen to talk about silence in life and in theatre. And, also, to travel through the theatrical silences that resonate in his memory and body.


But perhaps this very silence will endanger the speech. Perhaps the most important thing, beyond words, is to listen to the silence together.

In my inaugural speech at the Royal Spanish Academy. The House of Words, I imagined that the person delivering it was not me, the playwright, but an actor playing me. After all, it was a speech about theatre and silence.

It was immediately clear to me that that speech on theatre could become theatre itself; that is to say, a poetic experience in space and time, and that there would be no better actor to embody it than my admirable friend Blanca Portillo.
