Stabat Mater

Antonio Tarantino

Montse Esteve plays a prostitute in this irreverent and deeply moving story

As if it were a contemporary profane oratorio, a prostitute laments the disappearance of her son, a young libertarian who has been arrested by the police accused of terrorism. The mother’s solitude faced with the pain, the eternal dignity of the dispossessed and the hidden memory of the religious myths are revealed musically in vulgar, irreverent and deeply moving chitchat.

Stabat Mater is the first part of the Quattro atti profani by Antonio Tarantino, together with Passione secondo Giovanni, Vespro della Beata Vergine and Lustrini. Over the years, the play has become a contemporary Italian theatre classic because of its verbal magnetism and ethical strength.
