What really happened during the witch hunt in Catalonia?

Jan Vilanova has researched everything about witches, the attacks against women that society hid behind accusations of witchcraft, and the fear of what is different in an authoritarian and patriarchal society. Vosaltres les bruixes is the final result of this research process, a piece of documentary theatre based on real historical and legal documents that revolves around various trials against female and male witches that took place throughout the 15th and 16th centuries in Catalonia.

Alícia Gorina brings this text to the stage on the sixth centenary of the first document on witchcraft in Europe, written in THE Valls d’Àneu.

In 1424, the first European law on the crime of witchcraft was published in the Valls d’Àneu, and Catalonia became, until the 17th century, one of the most active territories in Europe in terms of witch hunts. In the 21st century, there has been a certain reclaiming of the witch figure by parts of the feminist movement, in which she is seen as a symbol of female power. This appropriation is not new—each era has adapted the figure of the witch to its own time. But what really happened during the witch hunts in Catalonia? Why did they begin and how did they spread? You, the Witches presents 42 real documents, most from various legal proceedings, that invite us to take a historical look at the phenomenon, dismantling beliefs, prejudices, and fantasies. A piece of documentary theatre that speaks about us, and also aims to pay tribute to all those—mostly women—who were victims of persecution.
