El Cadell
Una casa pairal. Ell hereta. Elles sostenen.
El Cadell takes place in a manor house that becomes a true protagonist, governing its inhabitants. The play could be titled L'hereu (The Heir), this person marked from birth by strict codes and rules, more overt or subtle, designed to ensure what is expected of him and prevent any desertion or dissent. In this small world, where everything seems to revolve around the male figure, his continuity, and the accumulated material wealth, it is the women ‒ mothers, sisters, aunts ‒ who are the true pillars of the house.
Perhaps I only became aware of it later, but difference and the construction of masculinity (including its fragilities and dissents) are two very powerful backbones of a part of my theatre. Still situated in the rural world, where I come from and which is also the geography of my latest plays (El Monstre, La Majordoma or El cos més bonic que s'haurà trobat mai en aquest lloc), I now add the question of legacy. Inheritance, in its ambivalence of perpetuation or destruction, is an issue that has always fascinated me and that some of the playwrights I most admire and love, from Santiago Rusiñol to Benet i Jornet, have addressed from their own perspectives.
