The TNC Youth Company was created in collaboration with the Institut del Teatre to investigate and systematise the performing codes of a Catalan “classical” actor. The company will be formed each year by a selection of new graduates who will rehearse a paradigmatic text of the heritage epicentre of the season. Later, the production will be staged at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and throughout Catalonia. The first play to be worked on by the TNC Youth Company will be El cantador, by Serafí Pitarra and Pau Bonyegues. With the subtitle “Chivalresque burlesque parody in two acts, in verse and in the Catalan currently spoken”, it is a parody of the romantic drama El trovador by Antonio García Gutiérrez, a great success of the Spanish theatre of 1836 that would inspire the libretto of Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi. El cantador was written in 1864 in collaboration with Pau Bunyegas, pseudonym of Conrad Roure, another key figure in understanding the theatrical and cultural renaissance of the time. Set in the 15th century, El Cantador represents the revenge of the gypsy Magdalena and of her secret son, the cantaor Don Manric, on the family of Don Nunyo, who had Magdalena’s mother burnt for witchcraft. The enmity of Don Nunyo and Don Manric, who dispute the love of Doña Leonor, will lead to a comic rivalry that will take completely distanced paths from the notions of honra and honor promoted by the narrative codes of drama in Spanish.
