Marie, la roja

What makes us prisoners? Laws? Prejudices? History? How others see us?

A story between bars about a woman imprisoned, accused of assaulting a policeman in a demonstration, who will try to paint the prison red and change the mentality of the other prisoners through her commitment to social struggles and feminism. A show that will reveal all the nooks and crannies and inconsistencies of justice and love.

Marie, la roja, with dramaturgy by Carles Mallol and directed by Ester Villamor, will enable us to discover the theatrical facet of Rosa Maria Arquimbau, one of the most exciting Catalan writers of the mid-20th century.

“I’m a somewhat different kind of feminist than the others,” wrote Rosa Maria Arquimbau in her column in La Rambla de Catalunya in March 1931, and also, “our feminism must be broadly liberal, radical, and democratic. And the motto must always be femininity, as undoubtedly, its success depends on it.” Marie, the Red is one of the few theatrical works by Arquimbau that was actually premiered in Barcelona. A text that fascinates for its forward-thinking ideas, for the boldness of making a woman deeply committed to social struggle and women’s rights the protagonist, and for delving into a taboo and complex space like prisons.
What makes us prisoners? The laws? Prejudices? History? The gaze of others?
We approach it without mincing words, with a striking rouge à lèvres and a good stiletto heel: with genuine Arquimbau spirit.
