Giovanni's room

Giovanni's room

Can you feel at home if you're not allowed to be yourself?

Eline Arbo, artistic director of the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, adapts the classic by James Baldwin Giovanni's Room. The play explores themes such as sexuality, internalised homophobia and social pressure, posing the question: can you feel at home if you are not allowed to be yourself?

A moving story of passion, loss, and the struggle between deep desire and societal expectations, based on Baldwin's masterpiece that tells the story of David, an American in France. David awaits the return of his fiancée Hella. But when he meets Giovanni, a charismatic Italian waiter, the two men become entangled in an intense affair. After three months, David's fiancée returns and he is forced to make a decision.
