Opening Night

La Veronal

The stage, the place par excellence of the theatre device, is at the centre of La Veronal’s new production

From the first mental image, the first expression of an inspiring idea, to the first time the curtain rises on a show, there is a series of events that start to accelerate with the strength of a snowball rolling downhill. Everything that happens in this period threads through the life of all those that form part of the process, from the director to the audience member who arrives at the last minute.

All of us, to a greater or lesser degree, put part of our life into what we do so there is much truth within the story shown on stage.

Opening Night reflects the profound admiration I feel as a stage director for John Cassavetes’ film, from which I have taken the title. Gena Rowlands once said: “We lived for cinema. They were intense and passionate years. The best of my life.” The performing arts have been my life since I founded La Veronal over 10 years ago now, and I have experienced every moment and every project from all the dimensions that make up the process. So in this piece based on my own experience, I want to show the audience everything that happens from this first idea in all its dimensions, from the intangible and psychological to the physical and tangible.

This show ends where all others have begun, when silence reigns over the auditorium and everyone holds their breath because the curtain is about to go up.
