An inaugural show that, in the spirit of the Decameron, brings together 10 unique voices with an eye on the new horizons that we are just now beginning to glimpse
Fifty years have passed since Pier Paolo Pasolini shot Il Decameron, a film inspired by Boccaccio's novel and its mostly erotic tales that, over 10 days, are told by 10 young people who have withdrawn to the countryside to escape the bubonic plague devastating Florence.
The Florentine's masterpiece ranged from tales from classical antiquity to medieval popular fabliaux, and with his humanistic sensibility stood as a bridge between the Middle Ages and European modernity. In his 1970 film, in contrast, Pasolini made Neapolitan life the real protagonist, endeavouring to portray one of the few sociological realities that still resisted being absorbed by the new global consumer culture.
The inaugural show of the new 2020/21 season brings together 10 unique voices in the Decameronian spirit, which took refuge from the most devastating turbulence to avoid being carried off by a disconcerting present. Perhaps, in its plurality, we will be able to find some points of clarity to help us confront the new horizons we are just beginning to glimpse.
